Egypt VAT rate

The standard VAT rate in Egypt is 14%. It applies to most taxable goods and services unless a transaction is exempt, zero-rated or subject to special treatment under Egyptian tax law.

Some goods and services are exempt from VAT or covered by separate rates and Table Tax rules. Before using the standard rate, check which tax treatment applies to the particular product or service.

How to calculate VAT in Egypt

To add 14% VAT to a net price:

VAT amount = Price excluding VAT × 14%

Price including VAT = Price excluding VAT × 1.14

For example, if the price excluding VAT is E£1,000:

  • Price excluding VAT: E£1,000
  • VAT at 14%: E£140
  • Price including VAT: E£1,140

To remove VAT from a price that already includes 14% VAT:

Price excluding VAT = Price including VAT ÷ 1.14

VAT amount = Price including VAT − Price excluding VAT

For example, if the VAT-inclusive price is E£1,140, the price excluding VAT is E£1,000 and the VAT amount is E£140.

When did Egypt introduce VAT?

Egypt introduced Value Added Tax under VAT Law No. 67 of 2016, replacing the former General Sales Tax system established under Law No. 11 of 1991.

The standard VAT rate was initially 13% for the 2016/2017 fiscal year. It increased to 14% from the beginning of the 2017/2018 fiscal year.
